It’s Almost Empty
March 22, 2012
We’ve been standing here at the ole water cooler for a while now, taking a break. But we’ve just about drunk it all. Or have we drank it all? I need a ruling here! Anyway, break time is just about over and we’ll be heading back to the studio soon. All the little mics and computers and processors are getting lonely. So while you’re waiting for us to drain the last drops from the tank, here’s a strange piece of music to download (click the blue word “Trilogist” below). Talk soon!

We Like Sound
March 15, 2012
We’re still on spring break! There’s fruit in my glass, and ice and other items in there, too. So while we’re all, um, waiting for the next show, here’s an activity to pass the time: Following are two samples of Wikipedia’s list of unexplained sounds, recorded by the NOAA’s Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array.
The first is called the bloop. You’ll hear some background noise, then the bloop about two seconds in. Note you are hearing it played back at 16x normal speed so in reality it is a very low sound. To quote the NOAA “… [it] was of sufficient amplitude to be heard on multiple sensors, at a range of over 5,000 km. The NOAA’s Dr. Christopher Fox does not believe its origin is man-made, such as a submarine or bomb, or familiar geological events such as volcanoes or earthquakes. While the audio profile of the Bloop does resemble that of a living creature, the source is a mystery both because it is different from known sounds and because it was several times louder than the loudest recorded animal, the blue whale.”

Cool.
The next one is called the train: “… an unidentified sound recorded on March 5, 1997. The sound rises to a quasi-steady frequency. The origin of the sound is unknown.” This is also played at 16x original speed.

Thanks to Wikipedia and the NOAA for dispersing this. Definitely have to sample one to use in an upcoming soundscape!

Rare Big-Eyed Nocturnal Animal Witnessed!
February 16, 2012
Yes, last Thursday evening a couple was strolling near their neighborhood pond when, yowza, up popped this thing! Scientists say it’s rare for these little critters to show up around that time of evening. No one knows exactly what the elusive creatures look like but, based on his own nighttime observations, a local artist has provided us with the sketch on the right.
Speaking of not knowing, in case you didn’t know, there’ll be a new show next week! We’ll be speaking with a very talented science writer and, hopefully, she’ll be able to fill us in some more about that little guy up there!
Sorry, only half of that is true. Yes, we have a very talented science writer as our guest next week but, no, that’s actually a picture of a, well, just hover your mouse over the photo for a sec and you’ll find out. See you next week with a new show!

New “Spiny Fruit Snacks” Post Dismal Sales
February 9, 2012
Company spokespersons have been unable to explain the poor sales figures for their new “pointy” line of fruit snacks. Consumers seem most concerned with the thorny-slimy texture experienced in every bite.
But, you know what? There’s no thorny-slimy anything in what you’re about to experience. Is this a long way to go for a joke? You bet! But no distance is too far for us, as long as when we get there, you get to experience the finest in top-notch entertainment! That’s right, just click the most fulfilling phrase in the previous sentence and bite in to a new episode of The Mikie Show, thorny free!

Sounds Like Aliens But It’s Not
January 26, 2012
See that little play arrow just below? If you click on that you’ll hear a sound that could be interpreted to be the sounds of an alien invasion or perhaps aliens just talking with each other. Maybe they’re talking with each other about invading. We’ll never know because it’s not the sound of aliens at all, just trying to fool you. But, really, it might have been, if I wanted to lie.
But no, there’s no more lying around here. We’ve been up at all hours of the night getting a new episode of The Mikie Show ready to invade your computer! No, that’s a lie, we don’t invade, we entertain, there’s a difference! So let’s all stand up and click the only meaningful phrase in the second sentence of this paragraph and we’ll march together for truth and upright propulsion!

We’re Back!
January 11, 2012
Yes, we’ve reverse flown the coop. After a sweet holiday break, we’re back in the studio. No, don’t cue that zombie music, this is the good kind of “we’re back.” Yes, we had a wonderful time lolling about the house, moving from room to room, occasionally stepping outside, what could be more fun!
But now it’s time to return to the thing that makes us all happy around here, a new episo… hold on, there’s something we have to straighten out first.
See that post down there—two posts down, just below the toast. Yeah, well, in paragraph one, we mention the new show coming January 10th. We meant to say January 11th. January 10th is when the show is actually finished but contractual agreements require us to post the show on Wednesday.
Okay, that’s not true. We just misread the date in our little cal software. Oy. So we blew that one. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Wait, today is January 11th. Hey, that means we’ve posted the show. Holy cow, it’s posted! Yes, just click the action phrase in the previous sentence and travel to the return of The Mikie Show, where everything happens on time!

Holiday Break Time
December 15, 2011
It’s that time of year. We’re taking a holiday break. We’ll be posting and tweeting, but we won’t have a new show until January 10th.
I know, what are you supposed to do in the interim? How can you possibly survive without a new Mikie Show for so long! Well, we’ve made it easy for you.
Let’s go back and listen to some past shows!
Ever wonder about a day in the life of a District Attorney? Got that (episode 19). How about the producer of REM and Nirvana? Got that, too (episode 10). How about a worm farmer or a mathematician? Those would be episodes 18 and 26, respectively. Oh, there’s so much more. We’ve got ghostwriters (32) and mining truck drivers (9) and screenwriters (4) and behaviorists (36). A newspaperman (35) and a Mars explorerist! That’s not a word but it’s what she does! (episode 43).
Like Roller Derby? Check out episode 41! Naturopaths your thing? (31) How about musicians (7, 22, 37, 44) or dancers (40, 34, 27).
Let’s not forget graphologists (6) or DJists (1), gardeners (2), sound designers (8), Olympic athletes (11), firefighters (15), educators (30, 45), documentarian/humanitarian (28, 33). Psychotherapist? Forget about it, baby (5, 20, 29, 42), airline pilot (12). Like the movies? Check out a costume designer (3). Then there’s charitable works (14), anthropologists (23, 38), philosophers (16), shoemakers (17), actors (21) and a B&B operator who also does many other things (13). Why not relax with a Cold War warrior tonight (39) or a toy store proprietor (24)? Like trees? Number 25 is for you!
Wait, that’s every show. I’m goin’ for it!
And as a bonus, every episode features original music and our host, Mikie, bringing you the latest news, quizzes (just think, now you’ll get every one right) and other guests you’ve come to love. Yes, we’ll all be there, we’re always there, just a click away. Phew, that is one long post. Talk soon, thanks for your support!

Scientists Discover Another Amazing Planet!
December 7, 2011
That’s right, scientists have yet to confirm this but it appears the new planet’s core is made up of pure dark chocolate surrounded by a creamy custard mantle and finally a tasty milk chocolate crust! We’re sending a satellite to it tomorrow.
Alright, that’s something I just made up. There is no chocolate planet, but I wish there were, don’t you?
Speaking of chocolate, we have something that’s almost as good: a brand new episode of The Mikie Show! Yes, another chapter of our little experiment has been baking at 350 for thirty minutes and is ready to serve. Just click on the best treat in the first paragraph and satisfy that sweet-tooth!

Behind The Scenes Seven!
November 30, 2011
Yes, it’s another edition of Behind The Scenes at The Mikie Show!
Let’s start with the most recent episode, number forty-four, Gordon. Look at the list of tags at the bottom of the post. There’s all sorts of items relating to the show’s content but wait, what’s that, right after Steely Dan—suction cups? When did we talk suction cups? And look, it’s there again further up in the “More on topics discussed in this episode… ” list, suction cups. What gives?
It turns out suction cups do appear in that episode but you have to really listen closely to hear it. They come up at the end of The News segment, about 5:57 in. The newscaster has finished the news and he needs to take a commercial break. Here’s the transcript of the last sentence of the newscast: “… and now, how about a word from our sponsor: float on down to Fred’s Beds where you’ll find the latest in suction cup technology…” There it is! It’s fading out so you might have to turn it up, but it’s there.
One more: in the last few episodes (starting with number 41, Sarah) we’ve given an extra clue to the sound quiz, hidden in the tags list. If you’ve already listened to those episodes and remember the quiz, check those lists, you’ll find a clue, promise. If you haven’t listened to those episodes, check the list while you listen to the quiz, you just might get a little help.
Okay, see you next week with a new show!

Wait, I finally did it. The sentences of this post alternate between period and exclamation point!
