What has this got to do with The Mikie Show? Turns out there’s lots of things in the show that sound like one thing but are actually something else. Take the sound of Tom the Scott getting down from a tree in Episode 52, Glenn. That’s just a recording of a rustling shrub, slowed down twig snapping and a couple of boulders being dropped on the ground.

As far as real sounds being what they are, any time you hear thunder or rain in the show, those sounds are real and are all recorded right outside our studio door. Yep, we have awesome thunder storms here and never miss a chance to record them no matter the hour!

Sew, now ewe have sum knew Mikie Show lore! Isn’t that suite? Wheel have moor from thyme two thyme. Until wee meat again!

We like making up sounds so here’s a few you’ve heard recently: In episode fifty there is an extended scene with our dear friend Señor Glow. When Mikie arrives at the motel room in that scene, someone has left the TV on, so he turns it off. The clicking sound you hear for the TV power switch (it’s an old school TV) is actually Mikie clicking his mouth, like a giddyap.

Also in that scene there’s the sound of a shower curtain being forcefully pulled aside. That’s not really a shower curtain, it’s the sound of shoving about twenty empty hangers in my closet! (okay, there’s a little bit of curtain in there too).

What else, hmm, oh, one last thing in that scene: sometimes, when a certain location needs to be implied, instead of adding digital ambience to a studio recording, it’s easier to just record the real thing. Hence, when Señor Glow transports me outside the motel room, it’s an actual recording of me standing outside a door with the microphone placed inside the door.

You see how fun it is to experiment with sound? Why not try your own experiments! If you get a good one, send it in and we’ll do our best to use it on the show!

It’s a good one, featuring an interview with Major Joe Da Silva, US Army. He’s done three tours in Iraq and was also in Afghanistan. We talk about the challenges of commanding, leadership and the soldiers he’s had the pleasure to serve with.

The first is called the bloop. You’ll hear some background noise, then the bloop about two seconds in. Note you are hearing it played back at 16x normal speed so in reality it is a very low sound. To quote the NOAA “… [it] was of sufficient amplitude to be heard on multiple sensors, at a range of over 5,000 km. The NOAA’s Dr. Christopher Fox does not believe its origin is man-made, such as a submarine or bomb, or familiar geological events such as volcanoes or earthquakes. While the audio profile of the Bloop does resemble that of a living creature, the source is a mystery both because it is different from known sounds and because it was several times louder than the loudest recorded animal, the blue whale.”

Cool.

The next one is called the train: “… an unidentified sound recorded on March 5, 1997. The sound rises to a quasi-steady frequency. The origin of the sound is unknown.” This is also played at 16x original speed.

Thanks to Wikipedia and the NOAA for dispersing this. Definitely have to sample one to use in an upcoming soundscape!

Alright, that’s something I just made up. There is no chocolate planet, but I wish there were, don’t you?

Speaking of chocolate, we have something that’s almost as good: a brand new episode of The Mikie Show! Yes, another chapter of our little experiment has been baking at 350 for thirty minutes and is ready to serve. Just click on the best treat in the first paragraph and satisfy that sweet-tooth!

Let’s start with the most recent episode, number forty-four, Gordon. Look at the list of tags at the bottom of the post. There’s all sorts of items relating to the show’s content but wait, what’s that, right after Steely Dan—suction cups? When did we talk suction cups? And look, it’s there again further up in the “More on topics discussed in this episode… ” list, suction cups. What gives?

It turns out suction cups do appear in that episode but you have to really listen closely to hear it. They come up at the end of The News segment, about 5:57 in. The newscaster has finished the news and he needs to take a commercial break. Here’s the transcript of the last sentence of the newscast: “… and now, how about a word from our sponsor: float on down to Fred’s Beds where you’ll find the latest in suction cup technology…” There it is! It’s fading out so you might have to turn it up, but it’s there.

Alright, I’ll fess up, I know what it means. October is a long month, Wednesday-wise (we usually post shows every other Wednesday), meaning instead of this week, today, our next show will be posted next week, on the twelfth, hey that’s the twelfth night, ya get it, sorry, where was I?

Oh yes, meaning. There’s an extra week in October, at least how we count weeks, so if you were expecting a show tonight, sorry, it will actually be posted a week from now, that’s it, that’s what it means.

There’s always a little tom-foolery going on here at The Mikie Show and, now and then, we like to let you in on it. Not about coming attractions or the production process, that we save for our twitter feed. No, this is about stuff hidden in the show that you can have fun listening for. For example in our most recent episode, number 38, Erin, just after the Clangs visit us, there is a short piece of electronic music. That same melody reappears in the soundscape that follows the interview. You’ll find it in the first half of the piece.

BTW, did you hear the music we used in episode 37 that featured our guest Abe Appleman playing? There were two pieces, the first right before the station break and a little tango about five minutes into the interview.

Lastly, check out the picture used as a thumbnail for episode 36 featuring Elizabeth Tilley. If you were to zoom in on that illustration, you’d find it to be a tree of life that “depicts the relationship between species on earth whose genomes have been sequenced.” (a quote from the wiki article) All those little dots and lines are actually names of trunks and branches and, I don’t know, leaves? Episode thirty, holy mackerel! Thirty is a lot if you’re counting episodes (not so much when counting bacteria but we’re not counting bacteria today). Why not join the celebration with me and my guest school superintendent Charla Argo-Wright. She is wonderful and has really interesting ideas about education. Plus, she implements those ideas in Hoonah, Alaska an island community of just over 800 mostly native people. This place is only reachable by boat or plane. And our friend, well, should I tell?
